Happy New Year!

We welcomed 2013 at home with good food and some great fireworks displays outside our apartment! Apparently everyone buys them and sets them off at midnight (or for several days before and after). It was really cool - it felt like we were in a war zone between the constant rumble of fireworks going off all over the city and the flashes of light in the distance! We sat at our living room window for about 30 minutes and watched some pretty good ones go off just on the other side of the apartment building next to us.
We're looking forward to all the great things that are in store for this year as we continue to make friends, learn the language and get settled into the culture!
We've been taking some Russian lessons with our friend Yura who is home from college for the holidays and it has been good. Mostly basic vocabulary - animals, fruits, vegetables, clothes, kitchen items, things of that nature. We dove headfirst into some grammar the other day and got completely overwhelmed in about three seconds flat. We're definitely not that advanced yet so hopefully our next lesson is back to basic words!

Today's Quirk:
This rather strange looking balcony - I was thinking that perhaps it's meant to be a hunting blind of some kind, ha ha. Think about it - in summer those vines are probably quite full and luscious - perfect for cover to  pick off pigeons or rabbits on the ground below.
